Updating
RSLogix 5 | Current Enhancements
| Current Repairs | Known Anomalies |
Caveats
IMPORTANT - Effective with this release V5.50,
RSLogix 5 no longer supports operation on workstations running Microsoft Windows
95 operating system. RSLogix 5 is supported on workstations running
Microsoft Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT 4.0 SP6a and greater, Windows
2000 or Windows XP operating system.
IMPORTANT- An I/O editing anomaly in RSLogix 5
V5.20.10 may have incorrectly saved I/O configuration information. Please
see the details below (use the "Current Repairs" link) prior to opening such
projects in V5.20.20.
IMPORTANT-CONFIGURING
I/O OVER CNET ONLINE ! Effective with V5.20.00 the CNET I/O applets are
updated from the data tables not the .XC file (as was the case in prior releases). See
"Current Enhancements" for further details.
IMPORTANT STX Users! Using
RSLogix 5 to upload or save PLC5 programs (in .X5 format), which contain structured text
program files, results in input expressions being modified.
This is true for all versions of RSLogix 5 prior to r4.11.00. Re-downloading after this occurs may result in
undesired operation.
IMPORTANT CONTROLNET 1.5
USERS! RSLogix
5 r5.xx and RSLogix 5 r4.xx integrate
with RSNetworx for the development and maintenance of ControlNet 1.5 systems. You must
update RSNetworx to r2.22 or later. Failure to update may lead to
unsatisfactory results. RSLogix 5 r5.xx or r4.xx should not be
used with any RSNetworx version prior to r2.22.
Failure to heed this caution may result in a corrupt ControlNet 1.5 configuration file
(.XC).
IMPORTANT EDITING ONLINE! If
you cut and paste or Drag and Drop to a data or address location while ONLINE, Your action
will take effect IMMEDIATELY! There is no
Are you Sure prompt for this action.
IMPORTANT ALL RSSql, RSView, RSLinx USERS!
If you
install RSLogix 5 r4.00.00 and save a new .RSP, your connection from RSSql, RSView, or
RSLinx to the tags contained in the RSP will no longer work. If you are using Tags acquired using an active
connection to the RSLogix 5 .RSP, Install the Database Update provided with r4.10.00 or later onto
the computer running the RSSql, RSView, or RSLinx application to resolve this issue.
IMPORTANT ALL USERS! When you accept
an online edit in RSLogix 5 r3.22.00 the data associated with the rung is transmitted to
the processor. The data sent to the processor may be out-of-date. When you
begin an online edit RSLogix 5 caches the values associated with the rung you are
editing. Upon acceptance of the online edit the cached data is sent to the
processor. This may affect your application program in ways you did not
anticipate. RSLogix 5 r3.02.00 did not transmit any of the data to your
processor. This resulted in many of you experiencing problems with online
editing. Earlier versions of RSLogix 5 operate as r3.22.00 does, RSLogix 5 r3.22.00
restores this earlier functionality.
IMPORTANT
CONTROLNET 1.5 USERS! After
downloading any ControlNet 1.5 configuration changes with RSNetWorx, you must
upload each PLC5 processor's program and save it using RSLogix to ensure that the
ControlNet system map remains synchronized.
IMPORTANT ALL USERS! Following
an online edit or project download the Enhanced PLC5 processor must generate the processor
checksum. The checksum generation is performed as a background processor task.
The calculation can take seconds or minutes to complete. If you perform a save
during the checksum calculation it is likely that you will be forced to upload the
processor project the next time you Go Online. RSLogix 5 r3.22.00 or later
warns you of this possibility if the checksum is being generated when you attempt to save
the project.
Enhanced PLC5 processors series E revision D or later contain an enhancement that
generates the checksum during the download.
All
Users
You must use RSLinx
r2.10.175 or later with RSLogix 5 with Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0 or Windows
98. RSLinx Lite is included with RSLogix 5.
To Update Release from earlier releases
[goto Top]
To
update to RSLogix 5 r5.xx from an
earlier version you must remove the earlier version first. Use Add/Remove Programs
in Control Panel to remove the previously installed version. Your project
files will not be affected. To install RSLogix 5 r5.xx run the SETUP
program located on the CD. Remember, your new r4.1x RSP and older RSP projects once
opened with r4.00.00 or later cannot be opened in versions prior to r4.00.00 of RSLogix 5.
NOTE! Upgrading
RSLogix 5 on WIN2K PC's that also have RSNetWorx installed
may require
you to reinstall RSNetWorx after RSLogix 5 is installed.
Important!
Projects that have
been created with r5.xx can be opened with r4.xx, however r5.x specific feature content
stored in the RSP file (CGM, VBA, etc.) will be lost if you resave in r4.xx.
New Features
[goto Top]
The following is a list of enhancements
included at the time the software was shipped to you:
The
following new features have been added to RSLogix 5 Professional:
-
A Logic
Trace feature allows you to use Web browser type navigation buttons to move
through your ladder logic history, quickly going to recently selected
rungs/instructions.
-
A Source Control capability, which allows the user to maintain a database of RSLogix
project files (.RSP) via 'Check In' and 'Check Out' options. This has
been implemented as a Lite version of RSMACC Archive.
NOTE: This functionality
requires
Windows 2000 or Windows XP. It
also requires installation and configuration of the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine
(MSDE 2000) via
the Source Control install, found on the RSLogix CD.
-
The ability to
create and edit database descriptions and comments using the RSLogix Automation Interface
-
Access to
Password/Privilege editing functions using the RSLogix Automation Interface
-
Added Memory Size to the Processor objects class
The following new features have been added to RSLogix 5 Professional and Standard:
-
Cross Reference Navigation which allows a user to
navigate to the "referenced" logic from the cross reference data on the ladder
display. For instance, it will navigate from an input instruction on a rung to
the "referenced" output rung controlling that instruction.
-
Auto-Document feature which prompts the user for
a symbol and description entry when a new address (undocumented) is entered in
the Logic editor
-
Scoping for
Search Operations permitting user to select which database fields to include
in text searches
-
Access to RSTune and RSLoopOptimizer from PID instructions in the RSLogix editor (this
Requires RSLinx V2.31 or later for Topic creation)
-
The current rung location is preserved when
going from OFF<>ON
No new features have been added in V5.20.20.
The following is a
list of enhancements included in V5.20.10.
-
Added support for the
1794-ASB Ser. E adapter
-
Added support for the
1794-OB32P and the 1794-IB32, 32 point discrete modules
The following is a
list of enhancements included in V5.20.
- Added the CNet Diagnostics file under the
Channel Status folder.
- When online the CNet I/O
configuration applets are now updated from the corresponding data table values, rather
than the .XC file. This was changed to fix the problem of I/O applet data not reflecting
the "on the fly" reconfiguration of CNet I/O data.
-
Added support for the
Domain Name Service client available in PLC5E and 1785 -ENET Sidecar modules
-
Added support for
using a host name and domain name in Ethernet message instructions
-
Added support for
importing HTML data in PLC5 ASCII data table files
- RSLogix no longer installs EDS files. They are available
from RSNetWorx and RSLinx.
- Added CNETSRVC.dll merge module to the RSLogix 5 install
to enable RSLogix 5 to read RSNetWorx configuration data without requiring RSNetWorx to be
installed. Under these circumstances the operation is as follows:
- Creating a new project works fine, except
that an XC file cannot be created or spawned, nor can an existing XC file be imported.
- For existing projects, if the XC
association does not previously exist it CANNOT be created.
- For existing projects, if the XC
association DOES exist, it cannot be edited; any attempt to do so clears the field without
warning.
- Projects for CNET PLC's can be created or
modified (including CNET-related instructions) except for CNET I/O Config.
- Opening a CNET project with a pre-existing
valid XC association (i.e. the XC file DOES EXIST in the specified path) and launching I/O
Config WILL bring up any mapped adapters and modules. However, launching any of the
discrete applets will show the addressing info to be incomplete, while the analog applets
will not initialize at all.
- Installing RSLogix5 and RSLinx or RSNetWorx, provides full
CNET project support.
The following is a
list of enhancements included in V5.00.
The
following new features have been added to RSLogix 5 Professional:
- Ability to
compare I/O configuration
- Ability to
compare channel configuration
- Added Custom
Graphic Monitor to enhance diagnostic capabilities
- Embedded
Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications editor to allow you to create scripts

- Support for
logging access permissions in Security Server
- CNET Hot Backup
support for PLC5 Series F/C
*The I/O
configuration applets for 1746/1747 I/O over CNET do not support entering safe state data. An application note with instructions for entering
safe state data is available through Technical Support.
When using non-default connections with 1746/1747 I/O over CNET, the
RSLogix I/O applet will not reflect the correct register allocation size for the
connection. This makes it possible for the user to misinterpret input data or overwrite
output data that is not really associated with the connection being displayed by the
applet. This not only applies to 1747 modules, but to 1794 and most 1771 modules as well. There are 2 ways to avoid encountering this
problem:
1) Always accept the default allocation sizes (the maximum number of
registers supported) when mapping these modules in RSNetWorx
2) If
non-default allocation mappings are selected, use the data table addresses rather than the
I/O applets for writing or reading information to/from these modules.

calculated and that a save may result in the need to upload the next time you go online
with the processor.
- Added
support for RSLogix symbols and address descriptions to the PC5 library function.
This support prevents any truncation from occurring when reusing the library with
RSLogix. When saving a PC5 library file intended for reuse with A.I. Series PLC5
software, address description lines containing more than 15 characters OR symbols longer
than 15 characters are truncated to match the A.I. Series PLC 5 programming software
address description and symbol length. You can prevent this truncation by limiting the
length of symbols and address description lines from the Tools>Options dialog.

If you have none of
these adapters there is NO problem.
The project can be opened with V5.20.20 as per usual.
Any
project created in V5.20.10 with any of the listed modules will have to be
opened in V5.20.20 with the Ctrl-Shift-O key sequence (rather than File>Open
or Ctrl-O.) This will be followed by a confirmation dialog confirming a
V5.20.10 project file.
Projects
created prior to V5.20.10 can be opened and saved in V5.20.10 provided you DO
NOT open I/O Configuration. The project will open in V5.20.20 with no
problems. Projects that are opened and I/O Configuration edited/saved in
V5.20.10 will be incorrect for these modules. V5.20.20 should be used to
open an earlier backup of the project.

RSLogix 5
r5.00.00
RSLogix 5
r4.10.00
- Copying
to .PC5 can take significantly longer than previous versions.
- Changing
the file type for instruction PID from PD to N or N to PD will not convert the data values
for new file type.
- Instruction
Palette for SoftLogix is missing EAF, NOW, SDT, GYR, GMT, it is necessary to key in the
instruction.
- If
a program is downloaded to a processor by another RSLogix station while the Checksum is
calculating in the processor, the RSLogix station waiting for the Checksum may experience
a GPF when Retry is chosen for uploading the Checksum.
RSLogix 5 r4.00.00
- In
Revision note display, the next button takes you backwards and the previous button takes
you forward.
- Output attached rung
comments may not appear when entered until verify rung is performed
- Search for rung comments
and Page titles doesn't work in Ladder view.
- No error message
displays for invalid GOTO
- Printing PID setup not
visible for an imported .X5 file. Will require user to verify program before it shows up
in report.
- Entering processor name
accepts invalid characters. Use of invalid characters will prevent AI 5 package from going
online.
RSLogix 5 r3.22.00
- Preventing you from
successfully calibrating 1794-OF4I modules.
- Preventing you from
successfully using the IO configuration applet for the 1771-RTD module.
- If you open the N-Series
configuration applet on a ControlNet 1.5 system any pre-existing configuration data will
be overwritten with zeroes.
- When using Next and Prev
to change the revision note currently be viewed the revision notes are not correctly
incremented or decremented.
- When performing an
online Save, if you indicate that data files should not be uploaded
during the save, please be aware that any data table values that you have viewed (either
in program or data files) will be stored to the offline image.
- Preventing you from
creating an IO link greater than Link 0 when configuring a SoftLogix 5 project.
- If you delete the data
table file associated with an Extended Force File (EFF) the EFF definition is not cleared,
you must clear the EFF or edit it's properties.
- If you program with
symbols you cannot enter an indexed symbol, you must enter the direct indexed address.
For example, if the symbol TEST is assigned to N7:0, you cannot enter #TEST in a
MOV instruction you must enter #N7:0.
- If you close the RSLogix
application during a save operation the software will GPF.
- If the drive letter you
specify in the path to your ControlNet
1.5 project's XC file is not present on your system the application locks-up. This
is most notable when passing a project between to different computers.
- If you inadvertently
delete channel diagnostic files RSLogix does not automatically recreate the files until
you open and close the channel configuration dialog.
- You can set the channel
diagnostic file of each channel to the same processor data file. This renders the
channel diagnostics feature useless.
- Several enhanced PLC5
processors offer you advanced PID control options. These options allow you to enable
or disable derivative
smoothing, zero crossing deadband, and bias back calculation. The
options do not appear as part of the PID instruction setup dialog. To change these options
you must edit the PD data file from a custom data monitor. The options are enabled
by default. To disable the options you must set (bit equals 1) the corresponding bit
in the PD data file. The bit controling derivative smoothing
is PDx:0.DFD. The bit controlling zero crossing deadband is
PDx:0.ZCD. The bit controlling bias back calculation is PDx:0.BCD.
- When searching the
direction selection Up does not function as expected. All search and replace
operations occur in the Down direction.
- You cannot change the
Spaces per Tab property for a Structured Text File when using Windows 98. The
software will GPF.
- The Xref
(cross-reference) Disable flag in the database has no effect on the cross-reference data
generated by RSLogix. All addresses are cross-referenced regardless of this flag's setting.
RSLogix 5 r3.02.00
- If
you delete the ControlNet 1.5 Data Input File (DIF), Data Output File (DOF),
Configuration, or Status data files while online, it appears as if the files were
successfully deleted. However, the next time you go online with the processor these
files will reappear.
- You
cannot add a chassis to a I/O scanner channel scanlist while online in Run mode.
- If
you attempt to print a SoftLogix 5 user-defined data structure that is complex and
includes nested structures it will take a extremely long time to generate the data file
report.
- The
verification of a STX program file that uses user-defined structure as the control block
for BTR or BTW corrupts the control block data.
- You
cannot successfully replace indexed addresses with non-indexed addresses.
- You
cannot successfully search for BOOLEAN elements of a user-defined structure
- You
cannot use user-defined structures as the control blocks for I/O module configurations.
Recommendations, Restrictions and Non-operational
Functions
[goto
Top]
The following is a
list of features and functions that are not fully implemented or non-functional at the
time the software was shipped to you.
- Upgrading RSLogix 5
on WIN2K PC's that also have RSNetWorx installed may "break"
the RSNetWorx install. Reinstall RSNetWorx after RSLogix 5 V5.20 is installed, to
remedy this.
- If you receive an error when attempting to open an .af5 file
(created with 6200) it's probably because the path to that file is too long. Move the
files to a \temp directory and try again.
- RSLogix 5 Professional includes Microsoft's Visual
Basic for Applications (VBA). VBA uses the objects, methods, properties and events
of the RSLogix automation interface enabling you to author scripts to automate tasks within
the RSLogix editor.
RSLogix 5 Professional includes the RSLogix automation interface to enable your use of
VBA. Refer to the license addendum for the specific terms and conditions of its use.
Rockwell Automation provides technical support for the RSLogix automation interface in the
context of a VBA (in-process) application. The technical support is limited to the
implementation of the specific objects, methods, properties, and events. Rockwell
Automation does not provide integration or debugging support.
- The
RSLogix description database can accomodate up to 64K descriptions, when running under the
Win 9X environments. Saving projects with description databases over this limit
under Win 9X will corrupt the database. This limitation is not present when running under
Win NT or Win 2K.
- It is no longer possible to provide the floppy disk image of the software
due to size and install tool limitations. It is possible to create the floppy image from
the CD image with WinZip and the floppy media if you so wish.
- RSLogix
5 will not work with or interface to the Rockwell Automation's DDMC product.
- There
are no configuration applets for QB/B or QB/C modules
- You
should not perform Online editing on a Ser A 5/15 PLC5 prior to revision P. If online
editing is required you must update the firmware in the processor to REV P or above.
RSLogix 5 correctly performs the online edit however, you may experience compatibility
issues with legacy programming products.
- The project file
projectname.RSP contains all database and project related files. If you need to share a
project with someone simply provide them with the projectname.RSP file and they will
receive all project related information. When sharing RSLogix database information with
other RSI applications, like RSView 32, you must use the Save database as external file
checkbox on the File>Save As dialog to make the database file available to that
application.
- The projectname.RSP file
contains both an on-line and off-line image of your project. This speeds the process of
connecting to a processor. These images can get unsynchronized, this occurs if you don't
save your changes when going from on-line to off-line. To synchronize the images you must
download, upload or save the project while on-line.
- If you install multiple
localized versions of RSLogix 5 (English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, or Portuguese)
on the same computer, the order in which you install the applications may impact the
embedded application text strings you are viewing.
- All
standard new platform PLC5 functions are available using RSLogix 5 and ControlNet 1.0/1.25
processors. You cannot alter the ControlNet 1.0/1.25 configuration from RSLogix 5.
- When
creating a new project using a ControlNet 1.5 PLC 5/60 processor the default series and
revision (C/L or D/C) must be manually set to D/D. If you fail to take this action
you may not be able to use the ControlNet 1.5 configuration file (.XC) with RSNetworx
1.06.38.
- When
opening a 6200 PLC5 .AF5 file all the 6200 PLC5 project files must be located in the same
directory as the AF5 file. The directory path and filename must be less than 63
characters in length or the operation will fail.
- When
going online with a Classic PLC-5 you must always upload the processor image. This is
necessary because Classic PLC-5s do not include a means to determine if the offline
and online images match. Quick Online will allow you to view an individual ladder file
after it is uploaded.
- There
is no formatted dialog for configuring VME PLC5 processor channels. You must view and edit
the data table file you assign as the channel configuration file.
- You
can only assign a symbol or comment to the element level of a user-defined structure.
- RSLogix
5 prints Ladder Logic reports as graphic files. The ladder report cannot be printed
to a text file. Other RSLogix 5 reports can be printed to a text file using the Generic/Text-only
printer driver in Windows.
- The
following characters may not be used in RSLogix 5 symbols, `
~!@#$%^&*()-+={}[]|\\:;""'<>?,./ . If you have used these
characters in a previous release of RSLogix 5 the symbols will appear in your ladder views
and reports. However, you cannot modify the symbol.
We recommend that you export the database to the ASCII CSV format to speed the replacement
of the illegal characters in your symbols.
- You
may experience video display problems when running RSLogix5 on computers that use the
Diamond Viper V330 display adapter. Please contact Diamond to obtain the latest driver for
the V330 to correct this problem.
